If you drive, you need auto insurance. But many drivers still cruise around town uninsured. But why? It’s because they don’t think they’ll end up in an auto accident. However, everyday hundreds of drivers find themselves in auto accidents, and I’m sure it’s safe to say that they weren’t expecting it.

Auto insurance is security. It’s a way to protect your car, yourself, and other drivers while on the road. Auto insurance policy holders pay premiums and in return, the auto insurance company subsidizes expenses involved in an auto accident. It’s a way to protect drivers against costly car repair, hospital, and even legal bills as a result of an auto accident.

But there isn’t just one type of auto insurance available. Drivers have a few options they can choose from when selecting an auto insurance policy. Drivers can choose the level of coverage and liability of their policy. However, more liability and coverage means higher premiums. So how do you decide what policy to get?

What to Select

When shopping for auto insurance, you first need to establish what type of coverage the state requires you to have and what additional coverage you want. Different states have different auto insurance coverage laws, so be sure to check with the DMV or your auto insurance company about specific state requires. But, in addition to state required levels of coverage, you can always add additional coverage to your policy. Standard coverage options include medical coverage, collision, and comprehensive coverage. Liability coverage options include injury and property damage. If you want to protect yourself from paying high medical fees for someone you injured in a car accident, include injury liability to your policy. With most policies, you can even state the level of liability coverage, dictating how much your insurance company will cover and what your premiums will be.

What Not to Select

Some people see auto insurance as a burden. They think they’re perfect drivers and will never get in an auto accident. And if they do, it won’t be their fault and the driver at fault will pay for any necessary repairs and medical expenses. So, they opt for the most inexpensive or basic coverage possible. If you’re one of these “perfect drivers” who thinks this way, you’re not looking at the entire picture. What if you’re rear ended and injured by an uninsured driver who flees the scene and is never found? Now you’re stuck with medical and car repair expenses. If you had a policy that covered you in such an event, you wouldn’t be stuck with the entire bulk of the bills. Basic auto insurance only provides basic coverage; and the term “basic coverage” means different things to different insurance companies. If you’re shopping for auto insurance, don’t just ask for the most inexpensive and basic policy. Think about what you need to keep yourself safe on the road in any situation. You never know what will happen when you’re on the road.

Auto insurance is a basic necessity of life. If you want to keep yourself safe while on the road, you need to have proper auto insurance and a policy with the coverage and liability you need to protect yourself and your passengers in any situation.

*New York State Auto/Car Insurance Coverage Laws Explained We have two types of insurance in New York State required of every motor vehicle. One deals with no fault insurance, which pays for medical benefits, lost wages, and some out of pocket expenses, regardless of fault. The other is liability insurance and they are not the same. What I want to urge each of you, is that you cover yourself as well as someone who is involved in a car accident with you. And by that I mean, if you carry 0000 worth of liability insurance, your protecting me, if you hit me with your car. If you get into a collision with another car, and you only have ,0000 worth of underinsurance coverage, then you’re protecting yourself only to the extent of 000. It pays for you to make certain that your underinsurance rates are as high as your regular insurance coverage. The cost is minimal and the protection is priceless. Now with no-fault insurance your medical expenses are paid. Within 30 days of the auto accident, you are required to notify your insurance company that you have been involved in a automobile accident. They will assign a claim number to your case. You will give that claim number to any treating doctor/physician or any other medical provider and they will bill your insurance company directly regardless who is at fault in this car accident. Your insurance company will submit you to a physical examination by a doctor of their own choosing in about 30 days after you start receiving …
Call a random insurence co. You could call yours. You may be able to have the D.M.V. or what ever they call the play where you apply for a liscense where you live. Did you talk to the policeman that wrote the report? You can just call the station and then leave a message for him/her to call you back. The officer can go to the persons house if need be also.

So what could possibly be more sleep-inducing than reading (or writing) a 650-word article about auto insurance? After considerable brain-racking, I’ve come up with one possibility: watching towels dry. However, if you drive a car in the United States, the law requires that you have your fair share of auto insurance. This article, in particular addresses one facet of auto insurance coverage: glass coverage.

So what’s your point?

The purpose of this information page is not to navigate the morass of options, riders, or auto insurance companies. If you don’t know whether you want “good hands” or a talking lizard, you should dig deeper on the websites these companies spend lots of money on to entice your patronage. Or you could investigate getting yourself a reputable insurance agent to act on your behalf. Insurance agents are people who think insurance is fun, and therefore can be trusted to accurately answer insurance questions. One resource for locating a reputable agent is the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America website: http://www.iiaa.org.

Again, what’s your point?

The point of this article is to address just one aspect of auto insurance coverage, namely the aforementioned glass coverage. Should you have it? Should you skip it? In most cases, a glass coverage rider can be added to your policy relatively inexpensively – depending upon your situation, it could be less than per month. Considering the cost of glass replacement (a windshield alone could cost over 0 to replace), it could be a wise investment. For a quick quote using the particulars of your vehicle, go to http://www.safelite.com and click the “get an instant quote” link.

But before making insurance decisions, you must assess your situation first. How much driving do you do? Under what conditions? On what type of roads?

Let’s address these questions individually. 1. How much driving do you do? If you normally drive 3.5 miles on Sunday to attend church, and park your vehicle in an environmentally controlled garage the rest of the week, you may not need glass coverage. However, if you drive every day, and if your driving is for extended periods, your chances of a damaged windshield due to road debris, flying junk throw up from passing motorists, or the occasional misguided pigeon, are statistically higher. Calculate your weekly, monthly, and yearly mileage to help you get an idea of how much time you actually spend on the road. You might be surprised at the results you find. 2. Under what conditions do you drive? Do you drive in adverse weather conditions? Windy or stormy conditions increase the odds of rubble being blown into your auto, and sub-freezing weather makes your windows more susceptible to damage by making them more brittle. 3. What type of roads do you drive on? If you drive on unpaved roads, your chances of catching a stone thrown up by another vehicle rise. Also, if you travel on highways or expressways, you increase your chances of damage from long-haul trucks or construction vehicles that frequently drop bits and pieces of stuff as they pass. In addition, your higher rate of speed means anything hitting your windshield is colliding with it at a higher rate of speed.

So I guess you’re saying my auto insurance coverage should include glass coverage.

I am not an auto insurance agent. I don’t work for any auto insurance company. I don’t even play an insurance agent on TV. The information presented here is to help you come to your own decision – to provide you with the auto insurance opinions of this author, and some food for thought. I will say, however, that I do carry glass coverage, and it has enabled me to replace several windshields in the past three years. And that, my friend, beats the heck out of driving around wearing goggles and a scarf like a WWI flying ace.

Reader’s Question:

I am so glad that hurricane season is already over because it is never easy to battle all these storms. Is it already the perfect time for me to buy a car insurance policy for my new finance car here in Florida?

Laurence

Miami, FL

The time prior to a natural disaster is normally not a good time to look for auto insurance. As a matter of fact, a number of insurers would not sell auto insurance if they are aware that a calamity is just going to hit your area. The reason for that is because insurance would not work if you buy it only when you need it right away. Since the hurricane season is already over, it would be the best time for you to purchase a car insurance policy for your new finance car in Florida.

You just have to make sure that you include comprehensive auto insurance coverage on your car insurance policy. This type of coverage would provide protection for any kinds of damage caused by natural disasters like hurricane and fire. In times of natural calamities, gap insurance and rental reimbursement would be of so much help for your finance car. The gap insurance would cover the difference between the amount you owe from the finance company and the real worth of your vehicle. Also, if your vehicle is damaged and has to be fixed, rental reimbursement would cover the payment for a rental vehicle for your transportation after the calamity. Be certain that you have comprehensive, gap and rental reimbursement as part of your auto insurance if you reside in an area wherein hurricanes and natural calamities often happen.

Reader’s Question:

My car here in Florida got damaged during a collision, unfortunately the one who rammed into my vehicle does not have car insurance, what can I do now?

Kenji

Boca Raton, FL

That is unfortunate but if your auto insurance coverage has an Uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage then this should take care of the damages or the necessary replacement and reimbursement for your vehicle. For those not familiar with this kind of car insurance coverage, an Uninsured/ Underinsured basically provides coverage for damages your car gets, as well as injuries you sustain in an auto accident and the other party is at-fault. You can use this to cover the difference on your expenses along with your comprehensive or collision coverage. This is definitely a type of auto insurance that everyone should consider getting.

If you have full coverage auto insurance then this should not be a problem. The reason you got car insurance in the first place is because of these scenarios. If you don’t have this kind of coverage under your policy, you could choose to go to court and have a judge there in Florida decide on how the at-fault party would need to compensate you properly. Also, don’t forget about your collision coverage since this may already provide enough money to pay for the damages or replacement of your vehicle. It would be very important to consult an agent with your auto insurance carrier immediately regarding this matter so you can take the right course of action immediately. Your carrier should be able to file the claim against the other party for you and advise you appropriately.

Auto insurance in the state of California has various types of coverage and this will be based on the kind of auto insurance claim that would be paid out to the policyholders and other people involved. A type of auto insurance coverage would be the personal injury protection or what is commonly known as PIP. PIP will give protection to the motorist or the policyholder and others, which depend as to who was in the vehicle when the accident happens. PIP will also give medical coverage no matter who caused the accident.

One other type of auto insurance coverage would be the liability insurance that will cover the damages sustained by the other driver in an accident wherein you are at fault. In case there will be a lawsuit filed against you, your auto liability insurance would also provide legal assistance. Bodily injury and property damage are the two kinds of auto liability insurance. Majority of auto insurance providers in California offer the same auto insurance policies. These types of auto insurance coverage will pay for anyone who is injured or killed in the accident in which you are at fault. You might think that the price of auto insurance is expensive when you buy coverage; however, it would be nothing in comparison to the amount you would have to shell out in case you don’t have any auto insurance coverage.
